The Indiana Mortgage Bankers Association (IMBA)
was organized in 1958 as a trade association in the real estate finance
industry.
The mission of the IMBA is to provide services, support, and information
to its members, and to promote sound and ethical business practices
consistent with industry standards.
President's Message

What a convention! For
those of you who were fortunate enough to attend the annual Indiana Mortgage
Bankers Association state convention I think you’ll agree with me, it was
one of the best in recent memory. I would like to thank those in
attendance; I hope it was worth the time you sacrificed to be there. I
would also like to thank Scott Weghorst, Chair of the Convention Committee,
Steve Piper, Chair of the 50th Anniversary Gala Committee, the
volunteers who served on these committees, Executive Director Al Thorup, the
many past Presidents who attended, along with our generous sponsors for
making this year’s convention such an overwhelming success.
The convention started with
two ‘regular’annual convention speakers, Tom Dinwiddie of Wooden &
McLaughlin and Brian Chappelle of Potomac Partners giving the 125+ in
attendance state and federal legislative updates. Griff Straw, CMB from AIG
United Guaranty gave a recap of what caused some of the problems in the
mortgage business and some insights as to the future. Dave Kittle,
Chairman-Elect of MBA nationally, started Thursday morning off presenting
his thoughts on the state of the mortgage industry and the future we face.
We received valuable insight into electronic mortgages by Nance Pratt Pratt
of eMortgage Services PropertyInfo Corp. and Alice Alvey from Mortgage U,
one of the region’s foremost experts on FHA financing provided a humorous
yet informative presentation on FHA financing, which now makes up
approximately 40% of all loans origination. Sales and marketing training was
done by nationally know mortgage trainers and coaches Doug Smith of Douglas
Smith and Associates and Casey Cunningham of Xinnix. Both were excellent!
The 50th
Anniversary Gala was an event of its own. Hosted by Chris Denari, the voice
of the Indiana Pacers, we had the rare opportunity to hear Quinn Buckner, IU
All American, NBA ring holder and Olympic gold medalist talk about teamwork
and dedication. Two of the highlights of the evening were a proclamation
presented by Joseph Heerens, Chief Counsel for Governor Daniel's office
forever proclaiming June 4, 2008 as “Indiana Mortgage Bankers Association
Day” and a special recognition plaque presented by Dave Kittle recognizing
the Indiana Mortgage Bankers Association for its 50 years of service to the
real estate finance industry and communities throughout Indiana. I was
extremely humbled and honored to accept both on behalf of the association.
Several of the past presidents in attendance recognized Karen Burch for her
many years of service to both IMBA and GIMBA and the evening came to a close
with an informative and humorous slide show presentation narrated by 1980
IMBA Past President, Meredith Wilson, covering the past 50 years in the USA
and mortgage industry.
I would like to again
congratulate Tom Dinwiddie and Meredith Wilson who received the first
IMBA Lifetime Achievement Award and Steve Piper of Countywide Home
Loans who received IMBA’s annual Distinguished Service Award. These three
individuals have dedicated countless hours to the organization and are
certainly deserving of this recognition.
In closing my first
Presidents Message I would like to give special thanks to Jerry Hays for the
outstanding job he did in serving 2 ½ terms as President. He guided us
through one of the most difficult periods in the history of the organization
and we will always be indebted to him for his service to the Indiana
Mortgage Bankers Association.
