The Indiana Mortgage Bankers Association (IMBA)
was organized in 1958 as a trade association in the real estate finance
industry.
The mission of the IMBA is to provide services, support, and information
to its members, and to promote sound and ethical business practices
consistent with industry standards.
President's Message
As
Mortgage Bankers in Indiana, what truly sets us apart from everyone else?
Are we smarter, faster, better educated? ….. We might be, but what really
sets us apart from other industry participants should be a code that we
apply to the way we approach what we do everyday. The Indiana Mortgage
Bankers, at the time they incorporated in 1960 developed and implemented a
Code of Ethics (attached) that has remained in effect, unchanged to this
day. Some things are timeless!! Our Code of Ethics should be something we
should be very proud of, something that should make our customers, vendors,
and co-workers want to do business with us. We all want to do business with
others that exemplify honesty, integrity, and competence. Our Code of
Ethics deals with all three. In order to be a member in good standing in
the Indiana Mortgage Bankers Association,
one must ascribe to the principal “WHATSOEVER YE
WOULD THAT MEN SHOULD DO UNTO YOU, DO YE EVEN SO UNTO THEM”. Seems like a
fairly simple and straightforward phrase. This was written into the
preamble of our Code of Ethics in 1960. While it does not roll off the
tongue easily if read out loud, the meaning to our members is not lost even
today. In fact, it should mean more to us today in light of the
difficulties that the financial industry in general, and the mortgage
industry specifically have been through in the past several years. Below
are some brief highlights in the Code reduced to my own words:
IMBA members should be well
informed on matters affecting real estate finance;
IMBA members should keep
abreast of market conditions to better serve their customer;
IMBA members should protect
those they do business with from fraud or any practice that may damage the
dignity of our profession of mortgage banking;
IMBA members should not
exaggerate, misrepresent or conceal pertinent facts in carrying out their
business;
IMBA members will not be a
party to any intentional act that is detrimental to property values;
IMBA members will never be
a party to any intentional misrepresentation relative to deeds, mortgages,
notes, or other related documents;
IMBA members should not
engage in the practice of law, and should refer parties to legal counsel
when appropriate;
IMBA members should be
careful to advertise only truthful and understandable facts;
IMBA members should enter
into financial obligations only with written agreements. Financial
obligations should never be verbal.
In summary, “WHATSOEVER YE
WOULD THAT MEN SHOULD DO UNTO YOU, DO YE EVEN SO UNTO THEM”. When we follow
this simple rule, most everything else becomes a little easier.
